Flu season — what flu season?

Yet we have to wonder why it is that some people simply do not get sick. The answer has to do with their immune systems.

by Debbie Williams —

It seems like flu is everywhere. People are coughing, blowing and sneezing. Even people who got the flu shot are getting sick. The media claim that this flu season is the worst in years. Hmmm. It seems like we heard that last year too, did we not? Then we are barraged with contradictory statements: Do not get the flu shot, or get the flu shot, it is not too late! Which to believe becomes a struggle.

Yet we have to wonder why it is that some people simply do not get sick. The answer has to do with their immune systems. In fact, a good indicator of how well your immune system functions is whether you got the flu or a cold this year. How does your immune system get you through the cold and flu season? How about allergy season?

An accidental discovery

One company learned an invaluable secret regarding how people’s overall health corresponds to the state of their immune systems. The Institute of Health Sciences Members Alert let the cat out of the bag when it published an article in 2006 about the employees of an animal feed ingredient supplier in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The employees who worked in the manufacturing plant simply did not get sick.

In fact, the workers who did not get sick complained because they felt five days of sick time were stolen from them, as their work environment helped keep them healthy. Sounds like a crazy complaint, does it not? Believe it or not, the company listened and gave them an extra five days of time off. This particular company saved money on their health insurance premiums every year because they did not have the health claims that other companies did. While most other company health insurance premiums were skyrocketing, this company’s premiums stayed the same.

The secret was that the workers who handled the animal feed manufacturing were getting residual health benefits from a compound they were exposed to every day. However, the front office staff who did not work with the compounds still got the flu, colds and illnesses like everyone else.

What was it about this compound that kept the plant employees healthy? The compound supported their immune systems. What was the secret ingredient? It was the yeast, which acted as an immunomodulator. Because of the plant workers’ proximity to the yeast production area, their bodies had developed highly active killer cells, lower immune suppressor cell counts and higher immune helper cell counts.

Interestingly, the plant’s manager, who is one-half of a pair of fraternal twins, was diagnosed 30 years prior with macular degeneration, along with his sister. The plant manager still had his vision intact; yet over the years his sister had lost 80 percent of her vision, making her legally blind. Another plant worker who had multiple sclerosis (MS) when she began working there 14 years ago had no progression of the disease.

Like those plant workers, my family has not been sick in 16 months. Typically, allergies, colds, flu or strep throat attacked us every year. Not anymore. We attribute our good health to beta glucan, which we take every day. It has helped us avoid colds, flu and allergies, as well as provided additional benefits. The particular brand of beta glucan we take is the most potent in the world, and comes from the walls of baker’s yeast.

What is an immune system?

A healthy immune system will keep you strong and help you avoid disease and those sneaky seasonal “gotchas” like the flu and colds. Eighty percent of your immune system lives in your gut. A healthy immune system means your tissues, cells and organs have balance and can fight invaders that enter your body.

The word “immunity” comes from the Latin word “immunis,” meaning “free of burden.” Our bodies take much abuse from viruses, germs, pollution, alcohol, tobacco and more. When the immune system is in a weakened state, diseases such as cancer can take the body hostage, using it as a happy host. I will discuss cancer and HIV/AIDS in a future article.

What is beta glucan?

Beta glucan is a polysaccharide and is considered the number-one immunomodulator on the planet. If you go to www.pubmed.gov and type in “glucan” you will see more than 11,000 studies from prestigious universities. Beta glucan can be found in seaweed and Japanese mushrooms, but this brand comes from the walls of baker’s yeast. Studies have shown that type to be the most potent in relation to immune response.

In my opinion, beta glucan is the most significant health supplement of our lifetime. Most people, including doctors, have never heard of beta glucan. This is likely due to the fact that 10 years ago beta glucan cost $200 a capsule, a cost prohibitive to the mainstream supplement distributors and consumers.

Unfortunately, many commercial brands are worthless. Out of the hundreds of immune products, one has been proven in unbiased university studies to be the most beneficial product for your immune system. It contains resveratrol and vitamin C. The synergy among the three makes the effect of beta glucan much more powerful. There is a 500 mg beta glucan available. This product is the best in the world, beating the number-two product eightfold — you would have to take eight capsules of it to get the same immune response as the leading brand. The FDA gives beta glucan the GRAS rating, which stands for Generally Regarded As Safe.

For maximum effectiveness, it is critical to take beta glucan on an empty stomach, so food does not compete with absorption. Without getting into the complex mechanics of how beta glucan works, essentially, trillions more cells inside your body are able to function as natural killer cells. No known side effects have been reported in more than 50 years of study.

Beta glucan is a great health insurance policy. It is safe for children and pets, too.
