Treating eye problems with colored lights and acupuncture

There is a saying in Chinese medicine that “the eye is the flower of the liver.” This means that whatever happens energetically in the liver will affect the eye.

How can colored light applied to the skin help treat eye problems? Contrary to what you might imagine, the answer is tied to the familiar Chinese system of medicine called acupuncture.

The Chinese have observed that energy, or chi, travels through the body in specific meridians, located near the surface of the skin and named after organ structures. Two meridians associated with eye disease are the liver-gallbladder and kidney-bladder meridians.

There is a saying in Chinese medicine that “the eye is the flower of the liver.” This means that whatever happens energetically in the liver will affect the eye. However, this does not mean that if you have an eye problem you have a corresponding liver aliment; we are talking about energy. Interestingly, in the Chinese system of medicine, each organ has an associated emotion. The liver is related to anger, and the kidney to fear. Disease is caused by excess energy flow or the blockage of energy in these meridians. Inserting fine needles into these meridians changes the corresponding energy flow.

In the 1970s, German acupuncturist Dr. Peter Mandel noted that the use of colored light on acupuncture points or meridians achieved better results than using conventional needles. After years of research, Mandel developed a diagnosis and treatment program based on the use of colored lights, called color puncture.

In order to understand how color puncture works, you must first understand that color can either have a warming, energizing effect or it can have a cooling, de-energizing effect. Colors toward the red spectrum have an energizing effect, while those toward the blue spectrum have a de-energizing effect. By using colored light on the acupuncture meridians and points, we are able to regulate the energy flow and treat the disease caused by either energy blockages or excess energy.

Three types of energy patterns are found in the color puncture model: endocrine, toxic and degenerative.

Endocrine is the pre-disease state. The patient has symptoms, but no visible pathology. The second disturbance in the energy pattern is the toxic state, when tissue changes develop, such as inflammation, congestion and blockages of energy flow in the body. The third type is the degenerative, where the body begins to show destructive tissue changes. Scar tissue in the macula is an example of this type. The value of this classification is that specific therapies can be developed to heal the disease energy pattern.

Color puncture is especially useful in patients who are not responding to other therapies. Often, after a few color puncture treatments, therapies like microcurrent begin to work much better.

An important use of color puncture is the removal of blockages which prevent the patient from healing. Often these blocks are related to emotional issues, such as the grief associated with the loss of a loved one, or a trauma like a car accident which has caused a physical block and is preventing healing. The last category includes emotional conflicts, such as issues between family members. In all these cases, color puncture can help break the blockage and begin the healing process.
